Dr. Thorsten Kohlmann

After working as a paramedic at the German Red Cross, Dr. Thorsten Kohlmann studied Medicine and started his clinical work in 2001 at the Department of Anaesthesiology at the Johannes Gutenberg-University in Mainz. Additionally to his qualification as an anaesthesiologist, he is specialized in emergency medicine, quality and project management.
Moving to Munich in 2007, Dr. Kohlmann focused on patient safety, clinical risk management and critical health infrastructures. He became the official Comissioner for Disaster Management of the entire hospital and coordinated the working groups for Mass Casualty Incident Management and other scenarios. According to his expertise, the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance sent him to Brazil in order to support the local hospitals to prepare themselves for the FIFA World Cup 2014. One year later, he initiated the Task Force Disaster Management of the major Munich hospitals.
Dr. Kohlmann was a former Medical Course Director of Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) and still is instructor for Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS). So it was obvious that he became a co-organiser of a special interactive training programme for medical students, called Trauma Evaluation and management Germany (TEAM-G). He also has special expertise in Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE), problem-based learning and won several Teaching Awards of the medical faculty of LMU. Dr. Kohlmann still works actively as an emergency physician in the helicopter medical services and is lecturer in post-graduated courses of the Bavarian Medical Association.
Currently Dr. Kohlmann holds a teaching assignment at the University of Munich (LMU) and is involved in several projects (hospital planning, emergency and disaster medicine, patient safety, telephone-assisted CPR) and training programmes focusing on emergency care, team work and crisis management at the Institute for Emergency medicine and Management in Medicine (INM), Schillerstr. 53, D-80336 Munich.
