Prof. Christiane Bruns

Christiane Bruns gained her medical license and doctorate in Dusseldorf in 1993 and she started her specialist training for surgery at the University Hospital in Cologne. She completed a two-year research fellowship at the Department of Cancer Biology, University of Texas, Houston in 1999.
After she finished her residency training at the University Hospital of Cologne in 2001, she changed to Munich University Hospital Grosshadern (LMU) where she became Chief Medical Director of Oncological Surgery in 2005 and passed the additional qualification in visceral surgery. At Munich University Hospital she was also appointed to Senior Assistant Medical Director of the Surgical Clinic and Policlinic, and she headed the Oncological Surgery and Pancreas Center.
In 2013 she was appointed to Director of Department of General, Visceral and Vascular Surgery Magdeburg.
Besides her work as a doctor, Prof. Bruns is involved in numerous medical professional societies, including the German Society of Surgery (DGCH), the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR) and the European Surgical Association (ESA). Christiane Bruns received several awards for her scientific work, including the Von Langenbeck Award of DGCH in 2003.
Prof. Bruns has extensive experience in the entire surgical spectrum, from large oncologic and colorectal surgery, to hepatobiliary surgery and transplantation surgery. She is also a specialist in minimally invasive surgery (keyhole surgery). Her clinical as well as scientific focus is on liver and pancreatic diseases. The main research interest of Christiane Bruns lies in cell and biomolecular studies on tumor angiogenesis, metastasis, tumor stem cells, therapy resistance, and individualized therapies for specific cancer.
Christiane Bruns was consultant for MMI in planning the new Swiss Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) at University Hospital Bern.
